Writing-to-learn pedagogies engage students by asking them to explain what they know, to interact with one another through peer review, and to learn through a revision process. Sweetland Center for Writing Director and English Professor Anne Gere and Chemistry Professor Ginger Shultz have developed methods to enable faculty to infuse writing into large gateway courses on campus and tested them in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and the College of Engineering. Now they are joining forces with the Digital Innovation Greenhouse to develop M-Write: a digital toolkit supporting the application of writing-to-learn pedagogies at scale. M-Write will combine conceptual writing prompts, automated peer review with rubrics, natural language processing, and personalized feedback using ECoach to create an infrastructure for writing at scale. This will enable the implementation of content-focused writing activities to better engage students from diverse disciplines in the subject matter and increase their comprehension of key concepts.

In 2015, the M-Write team was awarded a $1.8M grant from the Transforming Learning for a Third Century (TLTC) program through the Third Century Initiative to support the development of this tool and the practical use of writing at scale through the use of technology, with the goal of reaching more than 10,000 U-M students by 2021.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The popularization of MOOCs in the world of learning has led to more and more educational institutions joining to offer MOOCs. This growth brings with it great challenges for research, pedagogical, technological and organizational aspects. MOOCs are revolutionizing online education.

This conference will focus on the exchange of major trends and research results, as well as the presentation of practical experiences gained while developing MOOCs.; We invite researchers, technologists, and course designers from universities and industry to share their approaches and perspectives on key topics, including analytics and data mining, assessment, credentialing, pedagogy aspects, gamification, cloud services and resources, universal design, accessibility and technological frameworks/architectures. The programme of the event has tracks in Spanish and English.

This event is the reference MOOCs conference for Latin America. The Keynotes Speakers are world-class professors and researchers undoubtedly are the intellectual heart of this event. The international conference Mooc Maker 2017, has brought together an elite group, who have a long experience and commitment in the world of educational innovation and first-class scientific research.

CALL FOR PAPERS

PRESENTATION

The Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a popular phenomenon in the online learning world. Today many institutions offer MOOCs. This phenomenon has not only created a new trend in online education, it also has been adopted by a number of institutions around the world, allowing spaces for research in pedagogical, technological and organizational aspects.
This conference will focus on the exchange of popular trends and research results, as well as the presentation of practical experiences gained while developing MOOCs; we invite researchers, technologists, and course designers from universities and industry to share their approaches and perspectives on key topics, including analytics and data mining, assessment, credentialing, pedagogy aspects, gamification, cloud services and resources, universal design, accessibility and technological frameworks/architectures.
This event will be a reference MOOCs conference for Latin America. This conference is organized by the MOOC-Maker project. An initiative co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme – European Union. The MOOC-Maker consortium is composed by nine Higher Education Institutions from Europe and Latin America.

We invite contributions in English or Spanish in the following categories:

  • Description of workshops (up to 2 pages).

PUBLICATION

Conference Proceedings will be published online with ISBN.
A selection of the best papers presented at the MOOC-Maker conference (to be indicated by the conference scientific committee) would be invited to submit an article (extended paper) to EURODL (European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning), IRRODL (The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning), and J.UCS (Journal of Universal Computer Sciences). These submissions would be then subject to a standard peer-review process to be conducted by the journals in accordance to the publication procedures.

The ambitious Agenda for Sustainable Development and Education 2030 requires countries to report more and better quality data to track progress and inform policymaking on education and learning. But how will this broad data agenda be met?

As the Inter-agency and Expert Group Sustainable Development Goal indicators (IAEG–SDG) meets in Ottawa from 28-31 March, the UIS has released a paper that calls for a data revolution in education built on the foundation of national statistical systems and supported by a global compact for monitoring the global education goal, SDG 4.
The Data Revolution in Education, produced by the UIS as a background paper for the Education Commission, includes a set of recommendations for producing and disseminating high-quality education statistics for planning and monitoring progress toward education targets. 
The report calls for changes across three broad areas that address both the supply and demand sides of national education information systems.
Enabling environment: National statistical organizations require an enabling environment underwritten by more funding, investments in technology and skilled personnel, and greater efforts to overcome the fragmentation of education data and evidence sector across government agencies.

The UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is calling for proposals for its international conference titled ‘Transforming Education Conference for Humanity’ (TECH) in partnership with the State Government of Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam, India from December 16 – 18, 2017. The Conference is also supported by the Government of India – Ministry of Human Resource Development.
TECH invites submissions for proposals on the following themes that can be presented through a variety of formats (panel discussions, workshops, e-posters, learning zone and more..):
  • 21st Century Skills: The skills needed to address the challenges of the 21st century will be very different from the skills prioritized over the past six decades. New challenges in a rapidly changing world will require new skills for success. The advancements in the digital world have played a key role in shrinking the world and connecting societies in ways never seen before in human history. The conference focuses on exploring how digital pedagogies actually improve the efficiency of learning using the vast amount of big data and information available. In addition to improving numeracy and literacy through critical thinking, new competencies to meet 21st century challenges include social emotional skills such as mindfulness, empathy and compassion. Submission Guidelines:
  • The title of the proposal should convey the exact topic and its content.
  • A brief yet detailed description of your session covering the subject, objective and proposed outcome.
  • The method you use to deliver your presentation must align with one of the session formats
  • Please also submit a brief bio of the presenter and co-presenter.
All of the above must be submitted to tech@unesco.org by (11:59 p.m. Indian Standard Time) August 15, 2017.
